Small is better

A total of 254,084 people voted in yesterday's European Parliament elections out of a total of 322,411 registered voters. This means that the turnout reached 78.81 percent, down from 82.4 percent in the first elections in 2004. Taking a look at the voting trends across Malta it appears that the highest turnout was in the smaller towns and villages. The turnout was lowest in larger towns such as Sliema and Naxxar. It appears that democracy works better in smaller communities.
