Finding answers
Fabrizio Ellul at From The Land of Mickey blogs about artist Caesar Attard whose latest exhibition at the BOV Centre in St. Venera runs until the end of July
Caesar Attard comes from a time when roses were red, sugar was sweet and art, literature, music, politics, philosophy, natural breasts and everything else that mattered in life was still not declared dead. He is, somehow of, a Don Quixote, a Jesus without the pretentiousness of being related to god and an artist who sat too long on the shoulders of giants without realizing that a few are sitting on his.
The BOV retrospective exhibition is a tribute, a monument, a park and a bridge to this great man. I had the honour to be his student and now the privilege to work alongside this man. Anyone who has ever had a discussion with this person would tell you that had Huxley met Caesar before the mescaline, the book ‘doors of perception’ would have told a different story.
The exhibition covers forty years of his career. It explores his different anxieties, dilemmas and joy towards life and art. Caesar is a person that does not need any scout badge saying ‘I-am-an-artist’ to place him into the history books. He got there in his own way; without troubling or pestering anyone. He kept doing what he thought was right at the time; he worked, changed direction as often as possible with the hope of finding a few answers to his inquisitive mind. I do not know whether he managed to find his answers but his works will provide some to others.
