Egyptian Gods in Mdina
Journalism student Anja Schulze has been in Malta for seven weeks. In this article she writes about her visit to the Museum of Natural History in Mdina:
My cultural programme was limited to Sunday because Saturday I spent shopping, lying in the sun and simply relaxing. On Sunday I went to Mdina and Rabat and visited the National Museum of Natural history, the Domus Romana and the St Paul's Catacombs.
In the Museum of Natural History in Mdina there was the unique possibility to see an Egyptian mummy and the sarcophagus. It’s interesting to see how a 3000 years old mummy is in such a good condition. Furthermore there was a second room where they explained in brief the meaning of some Egyptian gods and displayed an alligator in a glass showcase. The permanent exhibition was also open. I walked through the rooms and with it nearly through all ages and the whole evolution.
The site was accidently discovered in 1881 when workers engaged in digging holes for trees came across part of mosaic pavement as well as skeletal remains. Today it’s a little museum consists of the history of Romans in Malta, parts of mosaic pavement and the remains of a cemetery behind the building...
