When I first wrote about Sarkozy's visit to Malta immediately following his presidential victory, I mistakenly referred to it as the "French island of Malta," when it is of course its own sovereign republic. Perhaps no longer. Today the top of the official Malta Tourism Office website has a prominent picture of Sarkozy, saying proudly: "Like Monsieur President of the Republic, come to recharge at Malta!"
