Faraway Chelsey

Chelsey Evans is a senior at Pittsburg State University and currently spending a semester at the University of Malta. A weekend on Gozo was the 'highlight' of her stay. From Faraway Chelsey:

..On Friday afternoon, we took a ferry from Malta to Gozo, rented a car (this took awhile - long enough to work up some serious hunger), drove around in the dark trying to find the apartment we had booked for the weekend, and finally found some dinner at a restaurant right on the water. Friday was hectic and confusing, not to mention tiring, thanks to the overzealous attention we received from a couple of Gozitan-Australian guys who talked to us non-stop while we waited to get the rental car. But renting a car for two days was surprisingly cheap, and our apartment was also a great deal, especially for how little it was costing us. Sadly, by the time everything was settled, it was quite dark, and late for Maltese standards (8 or 9 - everything closes much earlier), so we didn't do anything major on Friday evening. And yet, watching burned episodes of Grey's Anatomy was naturally very enjoyable for all. :)

On Saturday, we struggled to figure out what we were doing, but finally managed to find a grocery store and buy a bit of food for breakfasts and lunches during the weekend. And then we got on with the actual sight-seeing. We visited Victoria, a.k.a. Rabat, Gozo's capital city and saw a marketplace, as well as the Citadel, which offered us some amazing views of the surrounding city and countryside. We got acquainted with the roads - driving on the left side, mind you - and made our way to the Azure Window, which is easily one of the most beautiful natural formations in the Maltese Islands. Nearby was also the Fungus Rock, which the Knights of St. John once used for medicinal purposes, and an "inland lake" formed by a tunnel in the rock, allowing some of the Mediterranean to come through and remain trapped by land (I forgot its name..)

Several of the girls swam and snorkeled by the Azure Window, while I climbed a big rock...yes, this sounds very silly, but seriously it was a huge rock and the view at the top was pretty awesome. We saw some more of the countryside, as well as a couple of churches, in the late afternoon as it got dark, and then wound up at an amazing restaurant in Mgarr by the harbor, where the owner chatted with us and gave us a lot of free food and drinks with our meal...
