The true pit bull of journalism

The blogosphere's ability to include the whole planet in an immediate dialogue makes it the US's most vital news source, writes Arianna Huffington for the Guardian:

I am frequently asked if the rise of the blogosphere is the death knell for Big Media. My answer is that Big Media isn't dead; it's critically ill but will actually be saved by the transfusion of passion and immediacy of the blogging revolution. Blogging and the new media are transforming the way news and information are disseminated, as evidenced by the number of traditional media outlets, like this one, dipping their collective toe into the blog pond.

Blogs are by nature very personal - an intimate, often ferocious expression of the blogger's passions. You're much more intimate when you're writing a blog than when you're writing a column, let alone a book: the conversational nature of it; the way that it draws people in and includes them in the dialogue. You may set out to write about politics but, in the end, you write about yourself; about the things you care about beyond politics. And this creates a close bond between blogger and audience...

Blog, blog blog. The big brother censors find it so much harder to gag the blogger. There is no freedom of the press only shades of freedom. Granted samizdat newspapers of oppressive regimes ache for the "freedoms" of Malta or Britain but are these presses really free? Look at the global bias of Murdock, the self censoring US press who struggle to come to terms with their prosecution of an illegal war. Look at the increasing trend towards litigation in the UK which prevents genuine investigations into British war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq, for fear that the newspapers will face the wrath of the Government just like the BBC in the "weapons of mass destruction" lie case. The blogger gets us close, sometime so close we can smell the sweat and horror of war. There are no embedded stooges, though granted they try to pass their work off as a blog, the blog is edgy and real. Do all blogs become the personal, I guess so but to be honest Robert as is oft said the personal is the political. If it gets us talking then at least the discussion is out there as they say stateside. But then there is Google and its search engine rivals, they are now engaged in stifling the blog, afterall how else can they sell their merchandise in China? So once more censorship looms large and big business is colluding, does big business stifle free speech, you're the economist blogger Robert, what do you think?
