In 1948, Walter Whitehead, a young British soldier on his way home to England, spotted Malta from afar. Little did he know that he and his wife would be visiting that small island more than 90 times over a period of 30 years. “When we first arrived in Malta, it was very different – there were fewer buildings and more fields,” Aida Whitehead told The Malta Independent yesterday. “When we first stayed at Qawra, there were only two hotels, all the rest was fields.” Now on their 96th visit to Malta, there is little doubt that the couple have truly fallen in love with the island.
