Suburban scrawl
Stuart Fenech, a Labour activist in Australia, is preparing for his new role as Queensland Young Labour policy convenor. He is concerned about emerging racism in Queensland. From Suburban Scrawl:
Is it possible that we are moving backwards when it comes to racism in Queensland? I have heard at least two people say the word 'wog' in reference to people from the Mediterranean area in a genuinely negative way. Given that half my family is from Malta and these were the taunts they faced from bigots forty years ago, I find it bizarre for people to be using this term in this day and age. Given that these 'wog' statements were made in groups of people where no one objected, I am concerned that we are becoming even more accepting of racism.

Thankyou for noticing my blog and the kind words :)
I sincerely hope that my words on Malta here and there have been factually correct. I plan to visit Malta in 2006 with a strong contingent of family.
I should probably note that my politics, which are moderate left, are at odds with the politics of my grandparents, who were the ones who came from Malta. They were of the view that Labor parties were bad, trouble makers, etc. I have met some Maltese people in the Labor Party in Queensland, though. Noone in the family is troubled by my politics as they all love a stir.
Most of the remaining family in Malta are Cassar's (and Ellul, Abela etc). The family was originally from Zejtun.
I see a mention of Queen Elizabeth II. My grandmother, back in Malta, played with Queen Elizabeth as a child. These were the days before it was known she could ever be Queen, as the Queen's Uncle was King (I think).
