European Constitution

Elitsa Vucheva writes that Malta will put the European Constitution to a parliamentary vote during the summer. The Maltese PrimeMinister has announced that Maltese deputies will vote on the EU constitution on July 16. From EUobserver.com:

Malta is one of the fifteen countries to ratify the Constitution by parliamentary vote - the remaining ten are set to hold a referendum. A recent eurobarometer poll showed Europeans had only little knowledge of the Constitutional Treaty. This is the case for 60 percent of the Maltese population, with 28 percent not having heard of it at all. Only 31 percent were in favour of the document.

The MLP should wash their hands from any involvement with the EU Constitution. If a simple majority in Parliament is what is needed, then there is no reason why Labour should give the PN Government the morale-boosting lift of "national consensus." Labour has been fair in playing ball over EU participation after the people's verdict, but this should not include voting with a sad and tired government over something most people in Europe wouldn't give a hoot about.

The EU Constitution must be approved otherwise the EU will not function properly under the current Treaties. However, I agree with anonymous about the sad, tired, inefficient, pathetic and rudderless government.

The mlp is embarking on a comprehesive debate about the subject because it acknowledges the importance of the EU constitution. On the other hand the PN has avoided debate by saying that since it favours eu membership it should also favour the tabled text of the constitution - a very artificial policy that confuses two seperate issues.

Yes, the EU Constitution must be approved, but it is not necessary for the MLP to cowtow the government over it. A simple majority would do, At least labour MPs should be given a free vote so no one would need to complain after. The Nationalists do not deserve even an iota of support and the sooner they fade out of power the better.
